Newsletter – 1 November 2024

Hello everyone

On Friday 8th November Brian Lett will be talking about Minchinhampton at War in World War II at the Market House – that weekend will be busy as Minchinhampton Academy have a large firework and laser show on Saturday, 9th November with a bar, music and barbecue and this will be followed by Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day – see below for information from the Royal British Legion.

The Market House are appealing for volunteers to help them and generally there is a huge need for people to step up to help make things happen. Horsfall House is another organisation that needs help with fundraising and generally.  MinchLife have also asked for help particularly as we plan for next year’s Fayre on 13th September.

We will be decorating the High Street for Christmas and Howard Gilbert, the Rector of Holy Trinity Church, will be switching on the lights on Sunday 1st December at 4pm.  Do come along to make this a happy occasion.  Choirs will be singing and there will be refreshments.   It is also a wonderful opportunity to let us know how you could help.

The Royal British Legion Minchinhampton Branch Remembrance Sunday 10th November 2024
09.45 Church service at Holy Trinity Parish church followed by a parade from the lich gate to the Memorial Cross in the High Street. By 10.50 all gather at the Cross in the High Street for the Service of Remembrance.  The road will be closed at three locations from 10.45 to 1120:  Bottom of Butt Street (diversion up Friday Street). Bottom of Bell Lane (no diversion available) Junction of High Street and West End (diversion up Tetbury Street).

Armistice Day 11th November 2024
Short service of Remembrance at the Cross in Minchinhampton High Street.  Gathering at 10.45 and dispersing by 11.15. The road will not be closed, you are therefore advised to be aware of through traffic at this busy thoroughfare.

News from Minchinhampton Players!
The team that put on the very successful production of “OLIVER!” last Christmas, is hard at work on their new show for this year.  Called “BANGER AND CHIPS” it has been specially written for Minchinhampton Players.  It’s a hilarious comedy, with music, and it’s set in Minchinhampton!  (The plot involves a disastrous spelling mistake in the Stroud News and Journal.) The cast of teachers, police officers, dastardly crooks, and lots of school children, tell a tale full of hair-raising escapades and a very unlikely super-heroine. The show will be staged on November 28th, 29th and 30th, in the Market House, with a matinee on the Saturday.  Watch out for posters any day soon with details of ticket sales etc.

Minchinhampton Market House
The Market House needs your help!
To keep the Market House running smoothly, maintained, and available to the community takes local people to give a little bit of their time.  We are in real need of people wanting to help run the Market House.  Whether as one of the trustees or more informally as a volunteer to help with our events.  No special skills are required. Just a little bit of your time.  Join a dedicated team helping this iconic building remain open.  Want to help?  Please contact Justin Hodges (chair@minchinhamptonmarkethouse.co.uk or 07981 727971)

Minchinhampton Repair Café
A new monthly Free Service, at Minchinhampton Community Library, (organised by MinchCan and Eco Church) can help with broken mechanical and electrical items, toys and household items.  If anyone has sewing skills, and a few hours to spare once a month email canminch@gmail.com so that textile repairs can be offered too.  If they can’t repair an item, volunteers will signpost you to more specialist repairers and if the item is not repairable they can give advice on how best to recycle it.  The first café will be held on Saturday, 2 November and the second on Saturday, 7 December from 10.00-12.30pm.  No need to book, just come and meet us, bring your broken item and enjoy a cuppa and cake (or browse the books) while waiting for your item to be repaired.

Community Litter Pick
Minchinhampton Community Library will be holding litter picks on the last Saturday of every month, which means the next one will be taking place on Saturday, 30th November.  All those wishing to join in should meet at Minchinhampton Community Library, School Road, Minchinhampton, GL6 9BP at 10am.  From there, we will walk to Minchinhampton Common.  The route will be approximately 5km. We will be returning to the library at about 12 noon for refreshments. Litter picking equipment will be provided.

Minchinhampton Community Library is part of Stroud District Council’s new Litter Champion Hub scheme, helping to promote positive litter action and the importance of keeping our environment clean. The library has a supply of litter pickers, which can be loaned out to anyone wishing to drop by and do bit of ‘ad hoc’ litter picking in their own time.  If you don’t like litter, and care about keeping the Common clean, then come and join us on the 30th!  You’ll be able to find out more about how a Litter Champion Hub works, and what this means for Minchinhampton and its Community Library.  Everyone is welcome!

Stroud District Council Housing Officer at Minchinhampton Community Library
Housing Officer, Mark Snelgrove will be in the library between 10.30am and midday on Tuesday, 5 November.  He covers tenancy management and rent accounts but is happy to discuss other issues and signpost as appropriate.

New Crowdfunding Event – Minchinhampton Local History Group

Minchinhampton has a rich and diverse history that the Local History Group would like to celebrate.  Sadly, with no where to display items, many artefacts remain boxed up in storage.  Minchinhampton’s new history trail will bring the past back to life. The family friendly, accessible route will weave around the town centre using ten local businesses as stops along the way. At each location there will be large display boards and key artefacts, depicting a key theme from Minchinhampton’s past. To find out more click here.
