Hello everyone This month sees the production of “As you Like It” on Thursday, 10th July at Horsfall House. This is always a popular and happy evening so do get your picnics ready. Hopefully this warm weather will continue until then. Minch Players had a very successful series of plays “Close Encounters” at the Market House and Box Village Hall. Tickets were sold out so do hope as many of you as possible were able to see it. Richard Leach introduced the MinchLife committee to Jo Macaskie who has recently moved to Minchinhampton. She runs Miss Ivy Events so is bringing a great deal of expertise and help to us all as we organise the Fayre on Saturday, 13th September. Amongst other things she has introduced us to a Bubble Fairy and Face Painters and helped us with road signage. We are very grateful to Jo. Many of you will know Jess from Pamper and Scamper. She has a very successful dog training business, training dogs in fun and creative ways! She will be at the Fayre on Saturday, 13th September running classes for Best rescue, Golden oldie, Prettiest bitch, Handsome boy, Best Trick, Best puppy & Best dummy retrieval. Entries will be £2 per dog per class – registration on the day. Get practising! Former Surgery Site Minchinhampton Parish Council is pleased to announce that it has now completed the purchase of the former surgery site on Bell Lane, Minchinhampton. This important site, right in the heart of Minchinhampton, has been secured for the benefit of the whole community. By taking ownership, the Parish Council seeks to ensure the site remains available for community-focused use. The Council will now begin discussions with potential redevelopment partners, including Stroud District Council, Gloucestershire County Council, and other key stakeholders, to explore future possibilities for the site. The input of the local community will be important. We would encourage everyone to get involved and have their say in shaping the future of this space. Public meetings and consultations will be taking place in the coming months — details will be shared on parish noticeboards, our website and through our social media channels, so please keep a look out and come along. Together, we can ensure that this space serves the best interests of all in Minchinhampton Parish. Do you know about the Minchinhampton Patient Participation Group? Minchinhampton Patient Participation Group (PPG) was formed many years ago. Did you know that every NHS GP surgery in England has one? Also, that, as a patient, you are entitled to become a member? Pam Wright, a “native” of Minchinhampton, recently decided to find out more about it. She had visited the new surgery, on Cirencester Road, which was opened with much improved facilities and pleasant surroundings, and began to think about enquiring about the PPG. She joined Maggie Cornock (PPG Secretary) and EveJackman (PPG Chair) for a chat to find out more about it. Pam discovered that there was, from PPG members, a committee of volunteers who meet regularly to discuss issues related to patients and surgery staff interaction and new initiatives. Once a year there is an AGM to which all patients are invited. The Practice Manager and one of the GPs attend all committee meetings and keep the committee up to date with new initiatives and any issues which may arise – although few problems do – which is reflected in the “outstanding” rating of the practice by the CQC. These meetings also provide a chance for members of the committee to raise any issues or questions. Committee members have also been involved in surveys – the most recent being the experience, for patients, of the continuity of care. Pam was surprised, when talking to local people that few knew about the PPG (the surgery website has a section related to it if you would like to look for further information). She discovered that funding from donations and some fundraising events, over the years has enabled the PPG to donate extra equipment, on occasions, to the practice. Also, she learned more about the excellent volunteer drivers’ service offered under the PPG umbrella. A dedicated team of volunteer drivers and coordinators offer lifts, at 60p per mile, for Minchinhampton surgery patients, to attend medical appointments. Pam decided that she would like to be involved and, after a chat with Maggie and Eve, was invited to join the committee, which she has done – a welcome addition to the committee. Pam discovered that most of our committee members and volunteer drivers are in their 60s and 70s with a couple in their early 80s. Their experience is valued but a wider representation of all age groups would be beneficial to ensure that the views and concerns of younger patients are highlighted. The committee is hoping to arrange talks, on various medical topics of interest to patients in the future. These will be a chance to come along to learn more about the subject of the talk and the PPG. Once they are arranged, the date and venue will be notified locally and all patients are welcome to attend. Pam says “If you have read this and would like to be involved, either as a committee member or a volunteer driver for a few hours each week, please contact Eve or Maggie. Email Eve at – eve.jackman@btinternet.com. Email Maggie – maggie.maynot49@gmail.com. Dr Susie Weir As many of you will know Dr Susie Weir is leaving Minchinhampton surgery after 30 years of dedicated service. Pop in the surgery to leave a message for her in her Retirement book. To mark the occasion there is to be an informal tea and cake send-off at Horsfall House at 3pm on Thursday 10th July. Help a Hedgehog by Karen Ellis You may have seen recent requests on local social media requesting help as a result of finding hedgehogs down cattle-grids, seen out in the day, nests discovered etc. Often the response to these posts and the feedback I get by people is that they didn’t know there were hedgehogs around in Minchinhampton, let alone in their gardens so it’s a good time to do a little refresh! It’s good news – there is a reasonable number of hedgehogs in Minchinhampton often sniffing around in your garden when you’re tucked up in bed! They do need our help though as it’s a daily struggle for them, and without support and community awareness their numbers could quickly decline. They have two litters a year, one in late spring and one in Autumn, this is when the juveniles are especially vulnerable as they need to be large enough to survive winter hibernation. Despite purchasing lovely hedgehog houses in your garden they sometimes choose the most unsuitable places to nest. Nests have been found in Minchinhampton in plastic bin liners, piles of rubbish, bottom of compost heaps and under sheds and greenhouses. They are nocturnal animals so if you see one out in the day time it’s generally a sign it needs help (there are a few exceptions). Once a hedgehog nest is disturbed and there are babies/hoglets the mums defence is too often to run and sometimes abandon her babies. If you discover a nest, cover it back up immediately and leave it well alone. If you find an ill or injured hedgehog then, using gardening gloves, place it in a box and cover with some newspaper and cover the box with a blanket/cover and place in a quiet place and contact HHH. Take a look at our newly updated website here. Please call the Help a Hedgehog Hospital for advice – emergency number is 07867 974 525 email enquiries@helpahedgehog.org. So what can you do? Keep shallow bowls of fresh water out in your garden and make sure that if you have a pond or swimming pool there’s a way out (ramp, pile of stones etc). Assist with access between gardens by creating hedgehog highways – a gap the size of a CD between fences. Create a natural/wildlife area in your garden and avoid using slug pellets and insecticides. Put a bowl of meat flavour cat food, wet or dry, out at night, a feeding station is easy to make and stops neighbouring cats and foxes eating it. Check cattlegrids and other holes/areas where hedges could become trapped and be careful when having a tidy up that you could be throwing away a nesting hedgehog. Take extra caution when strimming/cutting long grass. We will be at Minchinhampton Country Fair so come and find out more information and help support this local charity by buying tickets for our amazing annual raffle. Minchinhampton Cubs have been busy learning about hedgehogs and are also trying to map where they have been seen. They are collating any sightings in Minchinhampton and will present their findings on a map that will be able to be viewed at the Help a Hedghog stand at the country fayre in September. Please email the road name of any hedgehog sightings to: minchcubscouts@gmail.com A note from the Friends of Tetbury Hospital The Friends of Tetbury Hospital would like to thank all those who supported the Tetbury Secret Gardens fundraiser on Sunday, 22nd June, for the new X-ray machine. It was an exciting day, the weather was kind to us, the gardens were glorious and the much-needed refreshments were appreciated. The estimated total raised was in the region of £9,000. News from Minchinhampton Community Library For those of you who are unable to visit the library during its usual hours, we are now offering WEEKLY Late Night Opening from 6.30-8.00pm, from Wednesday, 9th July until October. This year we are again joining Gloucestershire County libraries who have created a new bespoke challenge. It will be open to all children as well as those starting school this September. Throughout the challenge, library volunteers support children, helping them to explore a wide range of different types of books and enjoy a range of creative activities and events. There are lots of different interactive and fun challenges to complete and get free rewards along the way! The Library also holds several activities for both adults and children on a regular basis. During the school holidays extra events will take place, i.e. a free Craft Session for children aged 3+ on Thursday, 31st July at 2.00pm. Please check noticeboards, facebook and our website here for further details. May we say a big thank you to everyone who has so generously donated books to our library collection over recent months. These donations continue to be in very good condition, are recent releases helping to make our library a truly excellent community resource. Horsfall House Summer Walk On Sunday 8 June our community came together for a fundraising event that showcased the spirit and generosity of our local residents, visitors and supporters. The 10-mile walk that included rare access to Gatcombe Wood and Avening Court saw 270 enthusiastic participants and numerous canine companions make their way around our beautiful countryside. The event raised an impressive £8,000 that will help support those who are unable to meet the full cost of their care and to generate funds to continually improve our facilities. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the 30 volunteers and staff who provided a friendly welcome for our walkers and helped the day run smoothly; to our refreshments team at Avening Social Club who sold out of bacon butties, to the numerous individuals, organisations and businesses that provided route access, fundraising support, food, premises and a wall to hang our banners, and a big ‘shout out’ to our town crier, Tony Evans, for kickstarting the event. The dedication and support from everyone involved was truly inspiring, and we are grateful for the brilliant turnout. Your contributions will make a significant impact, and we look forward to continuing our efforts to support our community.
