MinchLife Newsletter – 1 December 2024

Hello everyone

Janet and I are sending out the December newsletter early as there are a quite a few events taking place on Saturday, 30 November.  One is Holy Trinity’s Christmas Fayre and the other is a special concert at Wotton under Edge (see under “Further afield” below).

Minch Life are very grateful to Pip and Dave Robb who have yet again donated the small Christmas trees for the High Street.   Do go along to the Scout Hut, in Dr Browns Road, to get your tree from there as a way of thanking them.  MinchLife were very grateful to all the people who helped trim the small trees, put on the lights and climbed ladders to insert them in the holders – particularly Andy and Simon from the Rugby Club and Vincenzo.   As always Richard Leech was a star!  Quite a feat with Storm Bert raging!

The 20 foot tree outside the Church has been sponsored by Holy Trinity, the Baptist Church and MinchLife.  Sunday, 1 December will see the switching on of the Christmas tree lights  and there will be carol singing, mince pies and mulled wine.   Please come along to support this – there might even be a donkey!   We will look forward to seeing as many of you as possible – 4.30pm for carols with the lights being switched on at 5pm. (Holy Trinity’s Carol service is at 5.30 pm).  MinchLife will be there hoping to recruit a few people to help at the Fayre on 13th September, 2025.

Plans are well under way for the Fayre – the bands have been booked as have many of the attractions.   Jess from Pamper and Scamper is to run the Dog Show.   We are booking stalls so would be grateful for any suggestions or ideas that you have – do email info@minchlife.com.

Finally, we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Advent Windows for Christmas
Co-ordinated by Tracey Clements, Minchinhampton’s Advent trail is starting on Sunday, 1 December in the High Street, in businesses and local Minchinhampton residences.  For the first 12 days of December a new window will appear each day and then on the 13th day all the windows go on display.   A trail map is being produced showing the location of all the windows.

Recycle Your Christmas Trees with Longfield Hospice in partnership with Just Helping
If you are looking for an eco-friendly way to dispose of your Christmas trees, Longfield Community Hospice can help you out with their annual Christmas tree recycling collection service in partnership with charity JustHelping.  In return for a voluntary donation, Longfield charity’s team of volunteers will collect your trees from your home, at the end of the festive season, and take them to be chipped and recycled at recycling sites across Gloucestershire, including Painswick Rococo Garden, where they are chipped into mulch and reused locally, making this the most eco-friendly way to dispose of your tree.  Hoping to collect and recycle more trees than ever this year, Longfield are aiming to raise more than £72,000, which could help fund over 1,300 hours of Hospice at Home care, wellbeing, bereavement and counselling services.  This is a huge operation for Longfield and last year an army of volunteers collected as many as 3742 trees over four days from households throughout Gloucestershire.   The scheme is endorsed by Stroud District Council and Gloucester City Council (working with Ubico) is also supporting the scheme by providing two recycling sites.

To arrange collection of your tree, simply visit www.just-helping.org.uk/register-tree and enter your postcode, where you can make a voluntary donation to your local community hospice. Bookings can be made from now until 7 January 2025.

New line dancing class for absolute beginners
Starting at Minchinhampton Academy on Wednesday, 8 January 6.45pm – 7.45pm.  Modern line dancing uses all genres of music and is suitable for all ages, shapes and sizes, and no partner is required.  It is all about having fun and there are a wide range of physical and mental benefits which include improved condition of your heart and lungs, increased muscular strength, endurance and enhancement of motor fitness.  Endorphins are released that can provide a natural feel good chemical in our brains.  Lynne Williams has 30 years’ experience as a qualified and insured instructor.  Classes are £7 on a pay as you go basis.  For more information email Lynne.e.williams@icloud.com.

Minchinhampton History Trail
In collaboration with local businesses, Minchinhampton’s Local History Group want to create a new, community inspired, interactive history trail in Minchinhampton to celebrate the town’s unique past.  The family friendly, accessible route will weave around the town centre, using ten local businesses as stops along the way. At each location there will be large display boards and key artefacts, depicting a key theme from Minchinhampton’s past.

The proposed Minchinhampton History Trail brings together a wide variety of local businesses and organisations, including the Church, library, butchers, various shops, pub, coffee houses and sports club, all of which see the trail as a great opportunity to improve footfall and generate more business. This in turn will help to improve the vitality of the town centre and improve the local economy.  The trail will also boost tourism, which again, will improve the local economy and increase footfall within the town centre. It is hoped that local residents will also engage with the trail.  The trail has grand ambitions to improve the vitality of the town centre by helping to improve its cultural assets.  For more information click here
