TWO MONTHS TO SAVE THE CROWN

TWO MONTHS TO SAVE THE CROWN

The Crown Inn was built exactly 300 years ago. It has been serving Minchinhampton all that time until the current owners Ei Group closed it in 2012, despite the previous occupier’s efforts to restore it. Ei has put it up for sale, and so now there is a risk of redevelopment unless we intervene. We may have only two months to save our pub. The reason for this urgency is that Minchinhampton Parish Council successfully got the pub registered as an Asset of Community Value (ACV) by Stroud District Council. This protection allows a community group like ours to put in a bid to buy it, but that status changes in Ei’s favour after 19 June.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
There used to be as many as 58 pubs and beer houses in the town. Now there are none. So we urgently need to raise funds to buy the pub, find a suitable operator and re-open the Crown as an attractive commercial inn providing drink, food, accommodation and events – all facilities that Minchinhampton needs but is currently lacking. Re-opening the pub will help to revitalise the town by bringing more trade to local businesses. Moreover, a working pub makes any location more attractive to people thinking of buying property in the area, and to young people who might want to move away.
