August Newsletter

As usual please see below a list of events taking place in the Minchinhampton area for the next month.   Although we circulated events for August last month, quite a few have been added.  For more information and detail please look at the website https://minchinhampton.life

We have just found out that 2019 is the 750th Anniversary of the Minchinhampton Fayre – which was first held under a Charter granted in AD 1269.

When the Charter was granted to the Abbess of Caen in 1269 the town of Minchinhampton was the centre of a flourishing wool trade and the Fayres lasted for periods of one week, usually in the Spring and Autumn.  With the coming of rail traffic and the Industrial Revolution the Fayres went into a decline and it wasn’t until 1967 that a small group researching into this sort of entertainment decided to revive the original Charter.  The plan then was to have the Fayre every other year but Minchinhampton has been without this event since 2015.

Now it is back!  We, Minchinhampton Life, are hoping that we can revive this traditional enjoyment but we need your support.  Please come along with your family and friends and give generously so that our deserving local charities can benefit fully. Exciting raffle prizes include a weekend break in a cottage in Herefordshire.

The date is – Saturday 14th September, 2019.  The day will start at noon with a pageant involving all the school children from the area led by the Gruffalo;  all proceeds go to local charities and there will be bands, a circus skills’ workshop, a fun fair, Punch and Judy, dancing displays, choirs, a dog show organised by Teckels, pony rides, hawks, comedians, vintage cars, a gliding simulator, stalls, games, tombola  and so much more.  The Gardening Club will have its annual show in the school hall and the Church will host a wonderful wedding dress and floral display.  Food and drinks of every description – a hog roast, a display of Indian cookery and tastings, falafel, sausages, burgers, ice creams, cakes. Henry’s, The Kitchen and The Chip Shed will be busy as usual.    On the Saturday evening there will be an Open Mic event in the Market House and an afternoon of events at the Cotswold Club.

All the details of the Fayre participants can be found on the website https://Minchinhampton.life as well as details of our generous sponsors.
