Our trip begins with time in Newbury\, before getting to Highclere Castle for a highly sought-after slot! Even as he wrote TV series Downton Abbey\, Julian Fellowes was picturing the setting as Highclere Castle\, owned by his friends\, the Carnarvon family. If you’re a fan\, you’ll recognise the grand drawing room and the dining room (presided over by the redoubtable Dowager Countess\, aka the late\, great Maggie Smith); but even if not\, this is a fascinating place\, with its gardens and park designed by Capability Brown; and its historic associations. In the cellars\, there’s a special Egyptian exhibition celebrating the achievements of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon\, who discovered the tomb of boy-Pharaoh\, Tutankhamun\, in 1922\, alongside Howard Carter.
