SUMMARY:Memorials to the Missing - a play not to be missed at Holy Trinity Minchinhampton
DESCRIPTION:Performance of a play originally broadcast on Radio 4 in 2007.  It dramatises the struggles of Major General Sir Fabian Ware – who is buried in Amberley – to set up what we now know as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission\, the first organisation in the world dedicated to honouring all those killed or missing in action\, irrespective of race\, rank or creed. \nAll proceeds from ticket sales will be sent to “Help for Heroes”.  Tickets (£12.00 each) will be available from the Post Office. \n4 years ago John Mounsey and seven friends put this play on at Holy Trinity.   To their delight this was very well received with many calls for it to be repeated.   It is a remarkable and moving play about a very remarkable man.  Don’t miss it!

Alongside the solemn beauty of his Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary\, we’ll hear some of his lighter-hearted vocal pieces\, showcasing the wit and variety of one of England’s greatest composers.\nWe will be accompanied by players from professional baroque orchestra Ensemble La Notte\, who specialise in historically informed performance of Seventeenth- and early Eighteenth-Century repertoire.\n\nSeasonal treats and wine will be available during the concert\, adding a delicious touch to a memorable experience. But more importantly\, La\nMattina is very much a community choir\, and I wanted to give its members an opportunity to take part in a work like this\nand for the local community to enjoy it”.\nPresented as a semi-staged performance in Holy Trinity’s atmospheric interior\, the production combines Purcell’s\nhaunting music with movement\, acting and evocative costumes and props\, bringing the tragic story of Dido and Aeneas\nvividly to life.\nFirst performed in the late seventeenth century\, the opera tells the story of Dido\, Queen of Carthage\, and her doomed love\nfor the Trojan prince Aeneas. From the tenderness of their love to Dido’s heartbreaking final lament\, “When I am laid in\nearth”\, Purcell’s opera combines dramatic intensity with some of the most beautiful music of the English Baroque.\nThe evening also features two of Purcell’s most powerful sacred works\, “Thou Knowest\, Lord”\, from his Funeral\nSentences\, and the eight-part motet “Hear My Prayer”.
