DESCRIPTION:Check in between 09.30am and 1.00pm at Minchinhampton Library.Put your best foot forward this June and join us on our annual charity walk that follows a 10-mile route around the beautiful scenery of Minchinhampton. The route includes rare publicaccess to the stunning Gatcombe Park Woods and the historic Avening Court\, openedespecially for our event by kind permission of the owners.The walk begins with check-in at Minchinhampton Library from 9.30am until 1.00pm. Pleasenote that the last entry to Avening Court is at 3pm. Toilets\, drink stations and refreshmentswill be available along the route.We will have a shuttle bus service on standby for anyone requiring transport from check-inat Minchinhampton Library to Avening Court\, and back via Avening Social Club. For anyonepreferring a shorter walk\, there is an alternative return route after Avening Court.Participants are required to register before they set off and if you pre-register online\, it will help us manage the queues on the day. Support for this event is by donation only\, either via our website or donations on the day. Meeting finishes at noon. \nWe are a very friendly bunch of men from all sorts of backgrounds. The garden will be bursting with butterflies (peacock\, red admiral\, speckled wood amongst them); all kinds of bees (didn’t know there was a buff-tailed bumblebee\, but I love the\nsound of it!); yellow rattle\, red clover\, marsh thistle… just teeming with beautiful\, colourful life! \nThis is both a visitor attraction and a centre for botanical research\, hosting the world’s largest single-span greenhouse (360ft x 200ft; huge!) The Great Glasshouse is built on the site of Middleton Hall\, once one of the most splendid mansions in South Wales. Its 18th century owner\,\nSir William Paxton\, didn’t just want an impressive abode: he spent untold thousands on creating an ingenious water park\, connected via a series of lakes\, ponds\, streams\, dams\, water sluices\, bridges and cascades. A disastrous fire in 1931 led to the estate falling into severe decline… \nBut that was far from the end of the story. In the 1970s\, local walkers set up a fund-raising scheme\, kickstarting a new life for this wondrous gardenscape.
