Ian and Katie’s coach trip to Kent

7 June - 11 June

Our revised holiday plans:
Thank you to everyone that has rebooked for next year. And for those of you yet to do so, we’d love to have you with us.
(We are asking for deposits by cheque this time, please, so they can be held on file and easily destroyed in case of cancellation. See bottom of this message for more detail.)
Monday, June 7, 2021-Friday, June 11 (four nights in 4* hotel, dinner, bed and breakfast included):
In June 2021, we’re off to Kent, with outings on each of the days (including the two travel days). Winston Churchill’s home of Chartwell (National Trust), a day in Tunbridge Wells, and a trip on the Kent & East Sussex steam railway are amongst the itinerary delights, and the holiday will include bed, breakfast and evening meal at a 4*hotel. We think there’s something for everyone – but it’s also a chance (we hope) for people who aren’t so confident about going away to know that Katie and I will be there to help out with any mobility issues, etc.
Here’s the itinerary in more detail, scoot to the end for the costs:
Monday, June 7 2021
Leaving from Nailsworth/Box/Minchinhampton on Monday morning, we’ll be stopping at Chartwell, Winston Churchill’s country home, near Westerham in Kent. It’s a fascinating history not only of the man but of Great Britain – here, he met with world leaders, composed speeches and wrote books. There are lovely gardens, and a welcoming café. nationaltrust.org.uk/chartwell
Tuesday, June 8 2021
We’re off to the spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells with more than 100 independently owned shops, historic sights, museums and churches: visittunbridgewells.com In the afternoon, we’ll trip the light fantastic to Hever Castle & Gardens, a double-moated castle that was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn. Packed with treasures, it also has stunning gardens set in 125 acres of grounds. There’s a choice of restaurants, cafés, etc, and a lovely shop: hevercastle.co.uk
Wednesday, June 9 2021
The morning will be spent at Tenterden (tenterdenkent.co.uk), another really lovely old town, parts of it beautifully preserved. Then, at 1215, we’re booked onto the Kent & East Sussex Steam Railway (kesr.org.uk) for a heritage journey of around 45 minutes to Bodiam, a 14th century moated castle, again National Trust (short walk to the castle: nationaltrust.org.uk/bodiam-castle). If you haven’t been before, you can find out for yourself why it’s one of England’s best-known and best-loved castles.
Thursday, June 10 2021
This is a day spent in Canterbury – need we say more! (Oh, OK, then.) Perhaps best known for its cathedral, part of a World Heritage Site, it also offers the King’s Mile, a collection of ancient streets (just a step from the High Street) where the independent shops include traditional traders such as jewellers, crafts and great places to eat. You can enjoy the Canterbury Tales, an attraction devoted to Chaucer’s literary vision, visit the Roman museum, enjoy the shops and restaurants, or simply drink in the history: canterbury.co.uk
Friday, June 11 2021
We depart today, but not without taking you somewhere nice on the way home! We’re booked in to see Polesden Lacey. One of the National Trust’s most popular properties, this is an Edwardian house and estate on the North Downs near Dorking. There’s a spectacular collection of fine paintings, furniture, porcelain and silver – in fact, it’s still very easy to picture some of the celebrated house parties that took place here. The grounds include a walled rose garden, ancient woodland and landscape walks. Of course, there’s also the traditional shop and café: nationaltrust.org.uk/polesden-lacey
If you’d like to book, or to know more, then drop Ian an email at bus@abbeyhall.info We’d be delighted to have you on board!
